Nepal Trek – April 27, 2016
Yesterday the team made their way from Kathmandu to Lukla. A flight that gives you your first glimpse of the the majestic Himalayan mountains.
Upon their arrival in Lukla, they were greeted with sunshine and clear views of the mountains. A meeting was set up with Dr. Lhakpa Nurbu Sherpa of the Thame Heritage Foundation (THF) to discuss their plans related to the Thame school building project and how the Apa Sherpa Foundation (ASF) and the THF could best work together to accomplish it.
It was a quick meeting full of information.
After meeting up with the Thule-Sweden team, they began their much anticipated trek, working their way to Phakding; A beautiful village set next to the Dudh Koshi river and the beautiful surrounding mountains. They were greeted by many people very happy to see Apa and his wife Yangjin.
The Thule team, with their expertise in filming and photography, captured the first trekking day perfectly. Including a drone visual over the first of many large suspended bridges the teams will cross.
Upon arriving at Phakding, Apa and team met with Nurbu Thile Sherpa
From the private school in Ghat. They discussed their biggest need: hot lunches. At the age of 4, many of the school children in Ghat must walk long distances up to two hours on steep trails to reach their school. Because of this, a hostel was set up for those who could afford for their children to stay. These children stay at the hostel during the week and make their way home on holidays. There are 40 children in the school of which 22 stay in the hostel. The need is for the children not lucky enough to stay in the hostel. Most days, they trek to school without any or little food for the day. The Apa Sherpa team and the school owner discussed details on what the cost would be to implement a hot lunch program for these children. When ASF returns, they will start working on a plan to find ways fund this type of much needed program.
Today, they make their way to Namche, the main trading village in the Solokhumbu region.
Today team ASF and team Thule begin their true assent into the Himalayan mountains. Trek with us!
